How to Install Leather Fork Covers
CAUTION:
The leather used to lace up the fork covers is strong, full grain leather - They can be broken if stressed too much, so go ahead and tighten them up, but just be careful! Reasonably tight fork covers won't slip, so don't be too concerned that they'll fall down.
TIP:
We recommend using some contact cement or double-sided tape between the fork and the leather cover when performing the installation. This will help ensure that the fork covers never slip down when riding. DON'T WORRY! - It won't harm the finish of the fork, and it will rub off if it ever becomes necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- There is no right or wrong way to lace the fork covers on. Some people start from the top and lace it down like their shoe. Others start at the bottom and work their way up. Decisions, decisions!
- Here's how most people do it: Begin by placing some contact cement on the fork and on the inside of the fork cover. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wrap the cover around the fork. Thread the lace through the top holes on the cover, letting the ends hang down to make sure you have the same amount of lacing on both sides.
- Take the end of one lace, cross over to the next hole on the opposite side of the cover, insert it, and pull it through. Don't pull it too tight yet or it will be more difficult to thread the other lace.
- Take the end of the other lace, cross over to the next hole on the opposite side of the cover, insert it, and pull it through. Now you can cinch it up. Tight! But you don't have to be an Arnold Schwarzenegger to get it tight enough. Pull too tight and you could break the lace. Not the end of the world, but definitely the end of instant gratification.
- Repeat the process until you have laced through every hole.
- Finally, tie a knot of your choice with the laces to keep them from loosening. Some people like to cut any excess lacing off, but I recommend leaving enough there to work with in the event you ever decide to remove and re-install!
CARE AND CLEANING
Avoid harsh cleaners or chemicals. Clean and condition the leather with Chilhowee Buffalo Butter or other quality cleaner/conditioner, following the instructions on the package. To avoid fading from the sun's UV rays, use 303 Aerospace Protectant on a regular basis.
If your leather becomes faded, you can use a quality black dye or other fine boot crème to restore the color.
